John D. – You aren’t broken, only lied to. How the laundry list points you to healing

John is from North Carolina, a 2017 & 2018 AWC Speaker. John has witnessed profound breakthroughs with inmates, opiate addicts in treatment, the homeless, and many more. John developed methods to help break down barriers to freedom, to find peace in both stillness and chaos. John has worked with clients and organizations from the East to the West Coast and at world conferences. He has shared his wealth of experience in speeches, teaching, and facilitating groups. John has 30 years of recovery and spent most of that time in rooms with his fellow travelers of ACA.

Karen R. – The “I AM(s)” to progress through the Promises

Karen, from Hendersonville, Tennessee, has been a 12-Step person since March, 1986. In 2008 she discovered ACA and through the program, found courage to travel solo all the way across the country to attend her first ABC in 2012 in Long Beach, CA. She says that is where she accidentally became a member of the WSO Board, and later served as Secretary for the WSO, completing her term in 2015. Karen was a practical nurse and later became a licensed massage therapist, worked for twenty years and retired in 2017. She says massage therapy is the perfect occupation for an ACA, as when anyone finds out what you do for a living, they immediately turn their backs to you–makes one feel right at home.

Jim Y. – Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Recovery

Jim is from California, a 2017 AWC Speaker. Hope for a new day and life began when Jim joined ACA in ACA not only saved his life but also gave him a brand-new life filled with gratitude, abundance and joy. He shares his experience, strength and hope by carrying the message through service participation with sponsorship, workshops, seminars, trainings, personal mapping assistance, listening and advocates for ACA’s Rights. He believes that everyone can benefit by lending a helping hand in today’s rapidly changing world – especially to those who suffer and are lost.

Hug Etiquette

Our own Doug P. has submitted an article to the WSO as part of a series or articles Addressing Predatory Behavior. In the interest of making sure our gatherings are safe places for all the Adult Children in the room Doug has some suggestions about addressing the customary way many of us hug one another at the end of our meetings and sensitivity to participants’ need for safety.

You can read Doug’s article “Hug Etiquette” here.

A weekend of reflection, renewal and fellowship

Aug 31, Sept 1 & 2, 2018

Welcome to the 4th Northern IL ACA Retreat. The format includes 5 meetings: 1 Friday evening, 3 Saturday, 1 Sunday with a focus on tools and positive takeaways. All meeting topics will be taken from the Big Red Book, presented in the form of a lead given by a preselected attendee, followed by breakout groups for discussion.

There will be time available for optional walk & talks, fellowship at the fire pit in the evening, journaling in the quiet of the gazebo overlooking the lake, or reading in your own private room.

Please join us for this special weekend at Benet Lake to grow in your personal recovery journey.
